Our aid minister, a friend in beads
WITH colourful beads dangling around her eyes from an intricate headband, the International Development Secretary appeared keen to embrace the local culture on her trip to Kenya.
As Penny Mordaunt was shown how British aid money was spent supporting communities hit by East Africa’s drought, she visited a Unicef- supported clinic in the north of the country. During the trip to the town of Marsabit, Miss Mordaunt, who took over the role in November, pledged more British money to families with malnourished children and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Wearing a Department for International Development top, she was pictured on Saturday surrounded by mothers and a number of young children and babies.
The minister draped colourful beads around her neck and also wore a striking orange patterned headband.
Miss Mordaunt said she had seen how the UK aid budget – currently standing at about £13billion – was ‘saving lives’.
