PUEL’S STOCK RISING FAST AT CLASSY LEICESTER
ONE is a manager whose appointment felt anti-climactic. The other was subject to feverish interest and a £10million bid for his services. But the current trajectories of Claude Puel and Marco Silva show how quickly perceptions can change in football. Not only has Puel led Leicester from relegation trouble to seventh since joining in October, he has gradually moved the team’s style from counter-attack to controlled possession. Now the Europa League is a distinct possibility. Puel puffed out his cheeks when asked if that was discussed when offered the role by the club’s Thai owners. ‘No,’ he said with a smile. ‘When I came in it was a squad in difficulties. It has been fantastic attitude from the players to work and try to improve.’ Jamie Vardy, who
converted from the spot, is continuing to produce defining displays, Harry Maguire was excellent in defence and Riyad Mahrez (right) has rediscovered his finest form. His goal in injury time to give the scoreline an accurate reflection was a demonstration of the Algerian’s poise and precision. Paul Gascoigne, watching in the stands, showed his appreciation. It was Mahrez’s eighth Premier League goal of the campaign and combined with seven assists represents an impressive haul. A greater all-round threat than when he was named PFA Player of the Year? ‘He was a different player then,’ said Puel. ‘For example, it was direct play, long ball, and after with Jamie and Riyad they made the difference. ‘I think the evolution for him is more consistency, because he can make some penetration, also he can organise the play, with one touch, two touches. Better? I don’t know. I think he is more complete.’ Can they keep him? ‘We know the transfer window,’ said Puel.
‘It is not a problem for him. He is enjoying his football.’
