Queen of the night ...Helen goes from cheery to gothic

- Daily Mail Reporter

DRESSED in a floral dress and bright crimson boots, Helen Mirren looks a world away from her latest film role.

Dame Helen, 72, who plays a haunted widow and heiress in horror movie Winchester, smiled and waved as she arrived at BBC studios in London yesterday.

Stills from the film, in which she stars alongside Jason Clarke, show the Oscar-winning actress dressed in a black lace dress and veil, pictured right.

The film, released next month, is inspired by true events and tells the story of a widow whose husband, wealthy gun manufacturer William Winchester, died suddenly. In her grief and with a £14 million inheritance from his business, Sarah Winchester convinces herself she is cursed by the ghosts of those who died at the hands of Winchester firearms. After seeking advice from a medium, she begins building an enormous, never-ending mansion.

When psychiatrist Eric Price (Clarke) visits the estate, he discovers that her obsession may not be so far-fetched after all. Dame Helen, who won an Oscar for her starring role in The Queen, said of the latest movie: ‘At its heart is something I feel strongly about, which is that people make massive fortunes selling arms.’
