ASK THE PHARMACIST

- Colin Dougall

QHow long is my prescription valid? ATHE majority of prescriptions are valid for six months. But there are exceptions — for instance, controlled

drugs such as sleeping tablets and strong painkillers are valid for 28 days only.

Most people want their prescription as soon as possible, but those with long-term conditions such as asthma, for example, may be given a prescription for steroids or antibiotics to get filled if they develop a chest infection so that they can treat it immediately rather than waiting to see a doctor.

QWHere should i store my prescription pills?

APILLS should be stored in a cool, dry place (below 25c) because medicines can go off if exposed to moisture, heat or direct sunlight, so a bathroom cabinet, or cupboard above the oven, is not advisable. Tablets and capsules tend to come in blister strips that protect them from moisture, but it’s important to be vigilant because if they go off, they may not work as well.

Some medicines should be kept in the fridge, including certain eyedrops and liquid antibiotics (amoxicillin and penicillin). The label will state if this is necessary.
