Golf Ball ‘to be London’s next big building’
IT already boasts a Walkie Talkie, a Cheesegrater and a Gherkin.
Now a giant ‘Golf Ball’ could soon become part of London’s skyline.
Glass orb designs have been commissioned for a music venue in an empty site next to the Olympic park in east London.
Initial plans show a giant sphere (pictured) made up of triangular glass panels with white frames elevated above the ground by giant pylons, allowing pedestrians to walk beneath it.
The designs, seen by The Guardian, sug- gest the spherical venue, which would have tiered seating, could hold up to 20,000 people.
The building could reach 427ft – 63ft taller than St Paul’s Cathedral, a source told the newspaper.
It is understood the plans were commissioned by American sports and entertainment firm The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG).
The proposals have not yet been submitted to the London Legacy Development Corporation. Last night MSG said it did not comment on ‘speculation’.
