Why potholes are staying

-

MOTORWAYS are receiving 52 times more funding than pothole-ridden roads managed by councils, a report claims.

The Local Government Association says the Government plans to spend £1.1million per mile on motorways and major A roads between 2015 and 2020.

But local councils will get just £21,000 a mile to maintain their roads. The findings will fuel concern for the ‘crumbling’ state of local roads, with councils under fire for failing to fix potholes.

Martin Tett, of the LGA, which represents councils, said: ‘Councils are fixing a pothole every 19 seconds despite funding pressures. They want to do more but are trapped in an endless cycle of patching up our network.’

The Government said councils were getting £6billion for roads between 2015 and 2021, which was ‘making a real difference’.
