Southgate’s Russia boost for Wilshere
JACK WILSHERE is set for an international recall having forced his way back into England manager Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans.
Southgate, speaking at yesterday’s UEFA Nations League draw, provided a clear indication that the Arsenal midfielder is on course to make Russia 2018.
Wilshere hasn’t played for England since the humiliating loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 but he is now back in the Arsenal team as a regular starter.
Southgate is expected to name Wilshere in his squad for next month’s friendlies against Holland and Italy.
‘It’s a real plus to see Jack playing at the level he is and looking as fit as he is,’ said Southgate. ‘He’s really playing well now and influencing big games.’
England will play Spain and Croatia when the inaugural Nations League starts in September and Southgate added: ‘Good games for us. The whole concept is to play high-level opposition and that’s what we’ve got. We’re pleased especially with Croatia, not a country we’ve played for a while.
‘Spain is a great opponent to be pitched against, a really good test for us. Players, fans, everybody gets more excited about these games and having to perform at a better level. Fewer friendlies and a better level of opposition works for everybody.’
