37 crashes … after council boasts about not gritting
MOTORISTS blasted a council for sending a ‘gleeful’ tweet about not gritting the roads... hours before a spate of crashes.
Norfolk County Council’s Twitter account posted on Thursday afternoon: ‘The sun has got it’s [sic] hat on and there’s no gritting tonight #NorfolkWinter.’
But temperatures plunged overnight and Norfolk Police issued an icy roads alert at 9.30am after receiving 37 reports of crashes.
The council eventually posted its own alert but locals were less than impressed.
Jo Woods replied: ‘My husband’s just driven to Wells from Briston and saw three cars off the road in fields. Shocking.’
Another woman said: ‘Embarrassing given the gleeful tweet yesterday about not having to grit. I saw two cars in hedges.’
A council spokesman said its forecaster did not predict the cold snap. He said: ‘We’re sorry if ... people experienced difficult journeys.’ It is understood no one was seriously injured.
