A TEENAGE girl hanged herself after accidentally sending a message to her boyfriend revealing she had cheated on him.

Charlotte Guy, 17, had intended her Snapchat confession to go to a friend, an inquest heard.

But she mistakenly sent it to 20-yearold Jack Hurst – and then told him: ‘Goodbye. Please forgive me’.

A final message said: ‘I love you - knowing that you hate me is enough.’ Miss Guy was later found hanged near the college where she had been studying healthcare. A coroner heard she had taken cocaine during a night out days earlier. But although she wasn’t a regular user, the troubled teenager’s mental ‘chaos’ meant the drug ‘may have had a greater impact on her mind’.

The hearing in Bolton was told Miss Guy had been dating Mr Hurst for two years. While she studied at St John Rigby College in Wigan, her boyfriend had left home to study at university in Newcastle. In a statement, he described how she had been worried about their relationship in the run-up to her death on September 24 last year.

‘I was concerned because she had made comments to me before about feeling that the world wasn’t meant for her,’ he said. When Mr Hurst went to see her on September 21 Miss Guy said she wanted to end their relationship but remain as friends. ‘I said that it wasn’t what I wanted,’ he added. ‘She asked if I was okay and I said that I felt we could continue our relationship.’

Mr Hurst said she went out with friends that night – a Saturday – and later texted him to say she had ‘kissed someone else’.

Three days later she sent a message that referred to her sleeping with someone during the night out. ‘She sent me a Snapchat message that was meant for her friend but that she had sent to me instead,’ said Mr Hurst. ‘She told me that it wasn’t for me, and apologised and said she was a horrible person.’

Mr Hurst said that just after 5pm she sent him a long text message which began, ‘Ok I think I get the point.’ ‘This message concerned me and I tried to call her but she didn’t answer,’ he said. ‘I got another message at 5.13pm saying, “It doesn’t matter. Goodbye. Please forgive me”. The last message I got from her at 5.14pm said, “I love you, knowing that you hate me is enough”.’

Worried for her safety, Mr Hurst called police and used her social media account to pinpoint her location. Earlier Miss Guy’s parents Martin and Deborah, of Orrell, Greater Manchester told how their daughter had previously self-harmed and had been referred to healthcare experts. They said their daughter had also made previous comments to her boyfriend about ending her life. Mr Guy said her final messages were ‘for attention’ and added: ‘I don’t think that she knew the severity of what she was doing.’

Toxicology reports showed Miss Guy, who also worked at a local swimming pool, had taken cocaine while under the influence of alcohol. Recording a narrative conclusion, coroner Alan Walsh said there was no evidence Miss Guy had used cocaine regularly but had done so in the ‘chaotic last 48 hours of her life’.

‘As a non-regular user, it may have had a greater impact on her mind at that time,’ he said. Mr Walsh said it was ‘usual for these relationships to have its ups and downs – on one minute and off the next’. ‘I accept at the time she may have been under the influence of cocaine and some of the effects of that may have changed her behaviour and may have changed her state of mind,’ he added. ‘I believed she was a troubled young lady.’
