EVER USED ANY OF THESE TELL-TALE PHRASES?
YELLOW: ‘Woke’ — a word that means a person is awake to the injustices of the world. For example: ‘He’s so woke, he would never wear a sombrero as it’s offensive to Mexicans.’
BLUE: ‘Trigger warning’ — this means a book or a film might contain an issue or scene that could ‘trigger’ hurt feelings, as in: ‘Violent Shakespeare plays should have a trigger warning.’
GREEN: ‘Check your privilege’ — we should be aware of our privileges when dealing with others and moderate our behaviour. As in: ‘He should check his privilege when he deals with female staff.’
ORANGE: ‘Microaggression’ — insulting behaviour expressed subtly as a function of privilege. For example: ‘He keeps displaying micro-aggression towards me — I’m sure it’s because I’m female.’
BLACK: ‘Benevolent sexism’ — when men say women are worthy of their protection or that they’re more nurturing than men, as this encourages the idea of male superiority.
PINK: ‘Safe space’ — a place where no upsetting language or debate can happen. For example: ‘I’m so happy my university has created a safe space.’
