Migrants rush to Calais after treaty talks

-

THE number of migrants arriving in Calais has doubled following recent border talks between Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron, volunteers claim.

Charity workers handing out food packages say there was a surge in arrivals within days of Mrs May and the French president signing the Sandhurst Treaty two weeks ago.

It promised to accelerate the processing of migrants in the port, but many claim this has raised ‘false hopes’ that crossing the Channel will be easier.

The surge in arrivals has led to increased tensions in the area. Last Thursday five migrants were shot after fighting broke out among rival Afghan and Eritrean groups.

Some migrants have suggested that the shooting may have been a result of a dispute over access to a lorry park controlled by Afghan smugglers.

One charity worker, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘It’s a very volatile situation at the moment. People are living in seriously inhumane conditions.

‘There has been an influx of people who have arrived post-Sandhurst Treaty. It happened within 4 hours.’
