He had the desire at 17

- RUSSELL SLADE Russell Slade was speaking to Tom Farmery

RuSSell SlAde gave Harry Kane his Football league debut in January 2011 when he was on loan at leyton Orient from Tottenham. I REMEMBER him coming to Leyton Orient when he was 17. He was a skinny 6ft 2in lad. He came on as a substitute away against Rochdale for 17 minutes.

His full debut came the next game at home to Sheffield Wednesday. He scored with a tidy striker’s finish. He was an excellent talent even at that age. He was always on the move in the box and knew how to get in a position to score.

Physically, as he’s got older, he’s filled out and he’s become much stronger. But he always had a real desire to get better and learn. It’s a message for a lot of young lads. He was prepared to go out on loan to learn his trade, to get better and to improve. Now he is an England striker, a top goalscorer and one of the most sought after players in the world.

He has always been very humble, too. He recently gave me a signed shirt, which was a nice touch.

He won’t be put off by speculation. He is very focused. There are a lot of very talented players out there who have probably not got the dedication to maximise what they’ve got. Harry has done just that.
