WHY McTOMINAY’S A GROWING THREAT

-

SCOTT McTOMINAY… the lad who grew 10 inches in 18 months and is eligible for England and Scotland.

WHERE HAS HE COME FROM?

McTOMINAY (left) joined United aged five and was in the same Under 16s side as Marcus Rashford. He has been used as an auxiliary centre forward — like Marouane Fellaini —– but the club sees the 21-year-old as a box-to-box midfielder.

WHAT IS HIS STYLE?

A GROWTH spurt during his academy days saw McTominay go from 5ft 6in to 6ft 4in in 18 months. He became ‘relentless’ in the gym to build strength and now his ability to protect the ball is one of his biggest assets.

SO IS HE A FUTURE SCOTLAND STAR?

DESPITE his Scottish accent, McTominay was born in England. He has attended training camps with Scotland’s youth sides and said last year: ‘I’m probably more Scottish than I am English.’ He is yet to be capped at full national level, so is still eligible for both countries.

WHAT’S HIS HIGHLIGHT SO FAR?

HE IS an Under 21 title winner, but McTominay’s career highlight so far was surely coming on as a substitute for United’s senior side against Arsenal in May. It was his debut with 60,055 fans watching at the Emirates Stadium. He lists Rashford’s breakthrough as an inspiration to him.
