Time to rewind? Joys that tech’s killed off

- By Jacob Furedi

YOU’D think we’d be glad that technology has spared us from queuing in the cold to use a pay phone.

And it’s hard to imagine anyone pining for the days of fiddly video recorders or bulky CD players.

But it seems that as our lives become increasingly digital, nostalgia has indeed kicked in – and a poll has found the very things that were once bugbears are now what we miss the most.

Top of the list was making mix tapes, followed by putting photographs into albums and recording television shows using VHS.

Also on the list were ringing the speaking clock, turning to a hard copy of the Yellow Pages and going into the travel agent to research a holiday.

However, the survey of 2,000 adults for British Airways also showed we do recognise some things have changed for the better. Some 43 per cent of those asked said they were pleased to no longer use fax machines, while 48 per cent are happy not to need to know their times tables off by heart any more.

The research found 58 per cent believe the majority of their activities rely on technology. The web is so dominant that the survey found it would take just seven hours without an internet connection for the average person to feel anxious.
