FAST food can trigger an immune reaction similar to that caused by a bacterial infection, according to a study in the journal Cell. When mice were given a high-fat, high-calorie diet, researchers found it induced ‘systemic inflammation’ that persisted even after they were back on normal diets.

It also led to genetic changes linked to an aggressive immune response, which the team, from the University of Bonn in Germany, said could raise the risk of diabetes and heart problems.
