It’ll be freezing for a month
BRITAIN is likely to remain in a wintry grip for another month, say forecasters.
Many parts of the country experienced further flurries of snow yesterday and the Meteorological Office says icy conditions could last into March.
For the second day running, ice and snow caused travel disruption, with roads left treacherous.
More snow is forecast for this morning – mostly in Norfolk and Suffolk but also spreading into the South East. And yet more freezing weather is likely in the coming weeks due to winds blowing in from Greenland and the Arctic Sea.
According to the Met Office’s longrange forecast, the next fortnight will ‘remain colder than normal, with the risk of snow’.
Apart from occasional milder interludes – including tomorrow and Saturday, which will bring cloudy and wet weather – there will be a mixture of sunny spells, wintry showers and potentially harsh frosts at night.
Later in the month and into March, there is ‘a greater chance of easterly winds, potentially bringing some very cold weather’. Even into March, ‘any milder and wetter spells may be fairly short-lived with temperatures colder than normal’, forecasters add.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: ‘The winter so far has been the coldest for some years – we’re going back to 2013 to get comparative conditions. The chances are it will remain colder than average as we go through February.’
He said Britain is experiencing an icy blast of polar maritime air from across the north-west Atlantic.
