I ENJOYED the stories about mishearing names, such as Mr Rant for Miss Durrant, and Irish Stew for Iris Dew (Peterborough), and recall a story of my own. At the time of Prince Charles’s inauguration as Prince of Wales, I decided to teach my class of six-year-olds the hymn God Bless The Prince Of Wales, so we could sing it at assembly on the day. As we came to the words ‘Oh let our prayer re-echo’, one of the children asked: ‘Please, Miss, what’s a Prairie Echo?’ The local paper was the Liverpool Echo so I guess she was trying to work out the connection to Prince Charles.
