A date with Mourinho is the prize for Huddersfield
THE reward of a televised Fa Cup fifth-round tie with Manchester United went to Huddersfield as David Wagner’s Premier league side beat Birmingham with three goals in extra time. The Championship club had taken a surprise lead through Che adams in normal time before a Marc roberts own goal took the match to an additional 30 minutes. Then a steve Mounie header and strikes by rajiv van la Parra and Tom Ince saw Huddersfield set up a meeting with Jose Mourinho’s United at the John smith’s stadium. Wagner said: ‘against a Championship side, a Tuesday night, under the floodlights is never easy. This was a win we needed to build up momentum for the Premier league.’ It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will risk alexis sanchez facing Huddersfield again after he was repeatedly fouled by Town in United’s 2-0 win at the weekend. Birmingham fans were perhaps more focused on the upcoming derby with aston Villa and maybe so was their manager, steve Cotterill, who made seven changes. Wagner made five. Birmingham took the lead at the start of the second half when adams scored on the turn and from distance. Huddersfield hit back with Ince blasting a shot at David stockdale. He parried the ball and roberts messed up his clearance as he kicked it over the line for 1-1. This was already a replay that both teams could have done without but extra time had felt inevitable. Birmingham’s legs were heavy and Mounie, Van la Parra and Ince sealed Huddersfield’s spot in the fifth round.
