THE STORY BEHIND ARMOIRE

- JENNY COAD

IT’S A WARDROBE: Yes, well, technically, it’s a large two-door cupboard usually moveable and originally used for storing weapons.

SO IS IT OLD? The one pictured here is a Louis XV double armoire dating from the 18th century. NAMED AFTER THE ONCE KING OF FRANCE? Indeed. Louis XV, also known as Louis the Beloved and greatgrandson of Louis XIV. Armoire styles were often inspired by and created specifically for kings.

TELL ME MORE: Those crafted by the cabinetmaker to Louis XIV, Andre Charles-Boulle, are known for being spectacular. Boulle was famous for his use of bronze and marquetry and went to town on Louis XIV’s commode chest of drawers.

DO YOU NEED A ROYAL BUDGET TO BUY AN ARMOIRE? Almost ... this one costs £895, vinterior. co. uk, but they stock many others.
