Disease that’s very common in canines

-

Breast or ‘mammary’ cancer is more common in dogs than in humans.

Around one in four female dogs who haven’t been spayed are diagnosed with the disease. The risk increases with age.

Although far rarer, male dogs can also be affected.

Certain breeds such as poodle and cocker spaniel are at a higher risk.

The tumours are often small lumps that can be detected by touch.

Early detection is key, with surgery to remove tumours the most effective solution. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are not very effective for dogs.
