‘YES — it’s very important any sexual partners are tested and treated for infections such as chlamydia,’ says consultant in sexual health Dr Lawton. ‘If not, you might catch them again.’ Untreated chlamydia can cause fertility problems for women as it can lead to inflammation and scarring, which can block the fallopian tubes.

‘In men, chlamydia is the most common cause of inflammation in the testicles. It’s not clear whether this affects fertility, but it can be painful. While most infections are curable with antibiotics, some may need more treatment. We advise abstaining from sex for a couple of weeks to ensure both partners are clear of the infection.’
