Unite our Kingdoms
THE difficulties in agreeing the arrangements for the post-Brexit border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic is part of a much more fundamental problem.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales each require such different outcomes to the Brexit talks that a satisfactory common solution might be unachievable.
Let us, therefore, have a referendum in all four countries on whether we should initiate the rebirth of the United Kingdom as a confederation of truly independent states, united by a common allegiance to our flag, the Crown, defence, democracy and the rule of law.
Each of the United Kingdoms could then decide upon its individual relationship with the mother country, the EU and the rest of the world.
We already maintain a range of different constitutional arrangements, including those with the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and overseas territories.
Our relationships are generally amicable, and a renaissance of the UK as a confederation of independent states could energise our citizens and reinvigorate our economies.
Crucially, the right to selfdetermination for all would remove many of the tensions about Brexit.
The recognition of the distinct characteristics and destinies of the newly formed confederation of four countries could give us all just cause to be proud, reinvigorated, more affluent and contented. CHRISTINE HULBERT,
