ART THAT COSTS SOME DOUGH
An internet craze, the idea is to create a portrait or drawing.
WHAT YOU NEED: 150g selfraising flour, ½ tsp baking powder, ½ tbsp caster sugar, a beaten egg, 150ml milk, oil for frying and a plastic squeezy bottle to dispense batter.
HOW TO MAKE IT: nathan Shields, a pancake art professional with 110,000 followers on Instagram, advises using an electric mixer to get your batter lump-free, a non-stick pan and a metal spatula. Sketch out your design on paper first. Draw an outline by squeezing a thin line of batter into the hot pan. Let the batter brown a little, then fill in the middle of the pancake before flipping. It’s harder than you think. My third attempt – a profile of the Queen, copied from a stamp – was just about all right.
VERDICT: Style over substance. The pancakes are dry and crispy in places, doughy and undercooked in others.
