Teens ‘killed their baby son’
TWO teenage parents were last night arrested on suspicion of murdering their six-week-old son.
A neighbour described hearing ‘bloodcurdling screams’ from their flat.
A 16-year- old boy and an 18-year- old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were detained for questioning following the incident in Southampton.
The family had been living in the flat designated for young disadvantaged families while waiting to be housed in long-term accommodation.
Social workers and housing officers are expected to be quizzed over their dealings with the couple as part of an urgent ‘multi-agency review’ of the tragedy launched by Southampton City Council.
Officers and paramedics were called to the flat at 5am on Sunday. One neighbour said: ‘ People heard a commotion and heard people shouting and arguing there. One person heard screaming.’
A Hampshire Police spokesman said: ‘The baby was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.’
