A SUNSET VALENTINE

-

It was 70 years ago and more Since the day that they’d first met, Sitting at adjacent desks at infant school, A day neither could forget. They grew apart as people do, They went their separate ways, Although they both married and had families And still remembered their schooldays. When out shopping one September day Across the market aisles, They saw each other once again And both exchanged shy smiles. A pot of tea was called for, A table just for two, Where they caught up with the years now past Just as old friends do. Both had lost partners, Each living on their own, They reminisced about their schooldays, The old friends they both had known. Each confessed they’d not forgotten The friendship that they’d shared, Each had often thought about the other Wondered how they’d fared. The winter days were passing quickly, They often met for tea, Sharing country walks In contented harmony. February was already halfway through When, as they went to dine, After waiting more than 70 years Each became the other’s Valentine.
