MIEP GIES (1909-2010). The Austrian-born secretary helped shelter Anne Frank and her family from the nazis in World War ii Amsterdam. After their capture, Gies kept Anne’s diary to hand back later. Gies, who only read it on publication in 1947, said: ‘i am not a hero. i stand at the end of the long, long line of good dutch people who did what i did, and much more.’ GRAHAM HILL (1929-1975). The Londonborn, twice Formula One world champion died, aged 46, along with five others when a light aircraft he was piloting crashed in Hertfordshire. The plane was bought with prize money after he won the indianapolis 500 race at his first attempt. His son damon Hill was F1 world champion in 1996.
