‘ALLERGIC contact dermatitis from earrings is a big problem as many people are sensitive to nickel, which can also be found in silver and gold jewellery,’ says dermatologist Dr Susan Mayou. ‘Many manufacturers are aware of this and so will often make the posts from more expensive, purer metals to reduce the likelihood of a reaction. However, the decorative part might still be made from a metal that causes a reaction, triggering dermatitis on the face or neck, wherever it touches the skin.’
