Don’t be tempted to hang on, JT

-

They love John Terry at Aston Villa, apparently. he may not be the best defender these days, even in the Championship, but the leader remains. If Villa make it back to the Premier League next season it will be, in part, because of the inspirational presence of the former england captain. No doubt Steve Bruce will want him to stay in those circumstances. he shouldn’t. This should be it. If Terry gets Villa up, he should go out on a high. What does one more year in the Premier League hold for him? Villa are not going to win it, or even compete at that level, so it is no echo of his glorious farewell as a champion at Chelsea. And he was already being exposed in that final campaign. Antonio Conte used him sensibly, tenderly even, with respect for who he was, and what he had been to the club. he gave Terry cup games and cameos when the match was won. he didn’t hand an ageing warrior too much costly responsibility. he let him take his ovation and leave with great memories. It won’t be like that at Villa. It will be a fight for survival from the start, against fitter, younger forwards who will be relishing a run at a centre half approaching his 38th birthday. One of the great skills in life is knowing when you’ve won. Terry won. If Villa get up, he should be satisfied.
