Net of spikes to tackle terror threat

-

A GIANT net covered in spikes is among the measures being used by police to prevent a terror attack at the royal wedding.

The 30ft mat to deflate tyres is designed to stop vehicles from targeting crowds in Windsor town centre when Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle.

Thames Valley Police, which will oversee security on May 19, is understood to have bought the X-Net from technology firm Qineti Q. It punctures tyres and destabilises the wheels of vehicles that drive on to it, the Sunday Star reported. The device was deployed on two streets in Windsor just before Christmas and then again a couple of weeks ago – the first time the nets have been used outside London.

Last year Scotland Yard unveiled its own version of the net, called Talon, in the wake of atrocities at Westminster, London Bridge and Finsbury Park.

It can stop a vehicle weighing up to 17 tons and can be deployed in less than a minute. Thames Valley Police said it did not want to specify anti-terror measures for security reasons.
