New train seats are so hard travellers told: Take a cushion!

- By Jacob Furedi

PaSSENgERS on Britain’s newest fleet of trains are being advised to take their own cushions to avoid suffering long-term damage... from the seats.

govia Thameslink has introduced new Tube-style carriages with straighter, harder seats that commuters say are too narrow.

The Class 700 trains will be used by govia’s Thameslink and Northern services on routes from london to Cambridge, Peterborough, Brighton and Bedford.

By 2021 more than 7,000 carriages across Britain are expected to have the seating.

Shelley atlas, chairman of Brighton line Commuters, said: ‘It does seem like you’re sitting on concrete. They are really hard due to the lack of padding.’ Robin lansman, former president of the Institute of osteopathy, told passengers to bring their own cushions to combat the discomfort.

He said: ‘Sitting on something that’s hard can cut off circulation and give you cramps in the back of your legs.

‘I see a number of patients with body fatigue from commuting. Cushioning, even just a small one, can really help the tissues and nerves cope.

a govia Thameslink spokesman conceded the seats are harder, but had to be in order to comply with fire regulations.
