THIS IS 51 WHAT LOOKS LIKE
JANE HALLAM lives in Stockport with her 19-year-old daughter Harriet. She is a businesswoman and founder of Esteem — No Pause, a nightwear line designed for menopausal women.
EXERCISE THE SISTERHOOD
I WAKE up at 5am, three times a week, to exercise with a group of 15-20 women, as part of a local initiative called the Busy Woman’s Fitness Project ( busywomansfitnessproject.com). We do a mix of core and high intensity training. I’m still a size 10, but it’s boosted my energy and transformed my body shape — I now have abs of steel! Group exercise is the best form of motivation.
DRY SKIN SOOTHER
I’VE struggled with menopausal acne. It took three months of antibiotics to calm the break-outs, but it left me with dry skin. A friend recommended a multi-purpose moisturiser, Tropic’s Tamanu Healing Balm (£32,
tropicskincare.co.uk). I’m obsessed: I’ve now replaced my Clarins makeup with the all-natural Tropic range.
INDEPENDENT WOMAN
SINCE being widowed 11 years ago, I’ve had to become a lot more independent — but it’s empowering. If there’s something I want to do, but no one else is free, I won’t let that stop me. I’m always going to gigs on my own and I’ve been on several solo travel adventures in America and Europe. My next trip is a Moroccan yoga retreat later this year.
DIY BLOWDRY CHEAT
MY HAIR has thinned with age, so I invested in a BaByliss Big Hair Styler (£40, johnlewis.com). It’s a blow-dry brush, which smooths frizz and adds volume. I rarely get a salon blow-dry now as it gives professional results. It’s a time-saver, as it only takes five minutes to dry my hair, rather than 15-20 minutes with a hairdryer.
MENOPAUSAL SLEEP SECRET
WHEN I hit the menopause at 48, I got terrible night sweats and insomnia. I would wake up in the middle of the night, damp and cold — it drove me mad. This inspired me to create my own breathable, quick-dry nightwear, which has really improved my sleep.
