The red carpet may have been a sea of sombre black, but the stars at Sunday’s Bafta awards still found a way to dazzle.

Wearing oversized earrings with a black dress is a tried-and-tested look. Not only do they inject colour and glamour into a lacklustre outfit, they balance out heavy eye make-up and lipstick. Large earrings also create an optical illusion, making facial features seem finer and daintier, which has the dual effect of elongating the chin and sharpening the cheekbones.
What’s more, faceted gemstones — and diamonds in particular — reflect light on to the face, making the skin look dewy and smoothing out wrinkles.
