My worst nightmare ... ice dancer’s horror at VERY public costume slip-up

- Mail Foreign Service

THE first notes of Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You had just started to play when French ice dancer Gabriella Papadakis realised that millions were about to see a great deal more of her shape than she had planned.

Her glittering emerald costume at the Winter Olympics became unhooked at the neckline and Miss Papadakis realised it was only a matter of time before her ‘worst nightmare’ happened and her breast made a live TV appearance.

But she and partner Guillaume Cizeron pressed on with their routine. ‘I felt it right away and I prayed,’ 22-year-old Miss Papadakis said.

Her prayers may have been answered. The couple came second, keeping their medal hopes alive, despite the fact that Miss Papadakis’ nipple was indeed revealed when she leaned back in Cizeron’s arms.

‘It was pretty distracting, kind of my worst nightmare happening at the Olympics,’ she said. ‘I told myself, “I don’t have a choice. I have to keep going” and that’s what we did.’

The Olympic debutants’ sambarhumba-samba to two Ed Sheeran hits earned them 81.93 points, behind only Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

It was the second wardrobe malfunction during the skating programme at the Pyeongchang Games. The back of Yura Min’s costume unclasped itself as she danced for South Korea in the team competition on February 12.
