WHEN we move our eyes, our eardrums vibrate and move in the same direction, even in the absence of sounds, according to a study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. These vibrations start before the eyes move, indicating that motion in ears and eyes is controlled by the same area of the brain. This discovery may lead to a new understanding of hearing disorders, such as difficulty following a conversation in a crowded room.
