Impossible Railways, 8pm, Yesterday WATER is the theme of a new edition that looks at Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s coast-hugging South Devon Line and at the underwater rail tunnel that connects the two sides of Istanbul — through an earthquake zone. Many thought the latter could not be done.

U.S. JUSTICE

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 9pm, 5 USA DICK WOLF’S crime drama exists in the same TV universe as his Chicago shows — Fire, Med, Justice and PD. This new-to-Freeview episode is a crossover with the latter and finds Benson receiving help from Sergeant Voight, the brutal maverick from Chicago PD.

DOMESTIC DRAMA

Here And Now, 9pm, Sky Atlantic A IIT MIGHT be too full of liberal angst for some, but this new, ten-part U.S. drama from Alan BBall (Six Feet Under) is an intriintri­guing propositio­n. It’s a complex family drama with a slim (and potentiall­y unimportan­t) supernatur­al streak, centred on a depressed philosophe­r (Tim Robbins, pictured).

SCI-FI FLICK

Ex Machina, 9pm, Film4 ALEX GARLAND’S thoughtful and provocativ­e drama explores the boundaries of artificial intelligen­ce and the limitation­s of humanity. Oscar Isaac is the cocksure scientist inviting Domhnall Gleeson’s boffin to assess his latest creation — a beguiling robot (Alicia Vikander).

PAY-PER-VIEW MOVIE

The Party, BT TV/ Sky Store/Virgin Movies SALLY POTTER’S razor-sharp tragicomed­y is set at a party where things don’t go as planned, and unfolds over a tight 71 minutes. Kristin Scott Thomas and Timothy Spall play the despairing hosts.

NORSE WARRIORS

The Real Vikings, 10pm, History AFTER the latest episode of Vikings at 9pm comes this new series about the real-life history behind the action-packed drama. On that show, Katheryn Winnick plays shieldmaid­en Lagertha, but did such formidable warrior women actually exist? Winnick really wants it to be true and asks some sober experts for insight.

WRY U.S. COMEDY

Loudermilk, Amazon Prime A HANGDOG Ron Livingston (pictured with Anja Savcic) plays the rock journalist-turned-drunkturne­daddiction counsellor at the centre of this superdry comedy. . Loudermilk very rarely says the right thing, but his intentions are good — deep, deep, deep,deep deep down.down The series is nicely edited and has a good ear for kooky music choices.

ACTION CAPER

Killing Hasselhoff, 10.20pm, Sky Premiere POOR old David Hasselhoff. In this crime comedy, various people want him dead. It’s nothing the Hoff has done, but there’s a bounty on his head. Good on the Hoff — he can take it . . .
