Prince George’s school jumper maker goes bust after 120 years

- Matt Oliver

A HISTORIC knitwear firm that makes jumpers for Prince George’s school has collapsed.

Balmoral Knitwear, based in East Ayrshire, Scotland, specialised in workwear, sportswear and school uniforms.

The 120-year-old firm’s customers included John Lewis and Harrods, with Prince George’s private school, Thomas’s Battersea, also sourcing clothes from the factory.

A set of ‘essential’ clothes worn by pupils at the £17,000a-year institution is thought to cost £340 in total, including a £25 jumper.

Four-year-old George, who is third in line to the throne, started going to the school in September and was pictured wearing the pullover, right.

Despite sales of £2m, liquidators said the company buckled under tough competition from overseas rivals selling cheaper products.

It has led to the closure of the firm’s Galston factory and the loss of 43 jobs.
