FAST CHARGERS FOR MOTORWAYS
SUPER-FAST electric car charging points could be installed on motorways, under proposals by National Grid.
It has identified 50 sites across the country where drivers could pull over and charge up in just five to 12 minutes – a vast improvement on the 20 to 40 minutes it takes at the moment.
It is forecast up to 1m electric cars will be on UK roads by 2022. Fuel giants such as Shell are already rolling out charging points at petrol stations. National Grid hopes to crack so-called range anxiety – drivers’ fear of running out of battery – which puts many off buying electric cars.
The sites identified – which would have 50 chargers on each side of the road – would mean more than 90pc of motorway drivers would be within 50 miles of a fast charger.
The infrastructure would cost between £500m and £1bn.
