CURLING GAFFE WAS ALL ABOUT EVE

-

THERE have been calls for technology in, of all sports, curling. Yet there is technology in curling. It was technology that showed Great Britain skipper Eve Muirhead (below) messed up inadvertently on Sunday by touching the stone after it had crossed the hog line — a fault called a ‘double touch’ that rules her turn a foul. As this was a vital play that cost Great Britain’s women the match with Sweden — although it was highly likely the Swedes would have won anyway — it has led to calls for video replays. Why? The video replay showed Muirhead had released the stone before the hog line, but that she probably did give it the merest flick after. But it was inconclusive. What was very conclusive was the excellent technology at work on the rock itself, which turns a small light red if there is any illegal contact. The stone was retested after Muirhead had fouled and was found to be working perfectly. No further technology required — unless what is really wished for is a rule to ensure the Brits always win.
