Facebook’s effect on young probed

-

MPs today launch a probe into how Facebook and other social networks are affecting children.

The Commons science and technology committee will speak to youngsters themselves, to establish what controls need to be put in place on the websites. Its chairman Norman Lamb said: ‘Social media and smartphones are increasingly being used by children. It is vital that we understand the impact this is having on them.’

Earlier this year, a major report from the Children’s Commissioner warned that children as young as ten were becoming dependent on social media ‘likes’ for their sense of self-worth.

Half of 11 and 12-year-olds have their own social media accounts, despite a ban on under-13s.
