Trouble ahoy!

THE submarine that was damaged in a training accident (Mail) reminded me of another peacetime incident, photographed by my late father, an RNVR midshipman, on the bridge aboard HMS Hood, then the pride of the Royal Navy’s fleet. During a Naval exercise off Spain in 1935, Hood was rammed by HMS Renown and both were forced to sail to Gibraltar for emergency repairs.

The photographic negatives were confiscated by officialdom, but not before my father had prints made, one of which was shown at the inquiry.

History not quite repeating itself over 80 years later, but not so very different.
