50 days: Out of the woods after a meningitis scare?

Over the past few days we’ve learned that if the e- coli spreads to alfie’s brain it could turn into meningitis. The word strikes fear into the heart of any parent, we are terrified.

He needs a lumbar puncture to test his spinal fluid for the disease, but getting the needle between the discs of his tiny spine is impossible. every time doctors try to curl his spine enough so they can get the needle in between his discs, his heart rate drops and they have to stop.

instead, he is given extrastron­g antibiotic­s and we all hope for the best.

Today, we find he has rallied — and even better, has doubled his body weight from birth. We are out of the woods. For now . . .
