106 days: Home at last as a proper family

AT LAST, we are taking Alfie home — in a car seat in the back of our car, just like any normal family. Emotions are high as we bid farewell to the staff we’ve grown to love. One nurse gives Alfie a toy penguin.

Today would have been my sister Tanith’s birthday. She died of cancer in 2009 and Alfie’s homecoming feels like a gift from her. It feels strange but wonderful to sit on our own sofa with Alfie in his Moses basket.
