Get into IT and you could run the world

- LINDA WHITNEY

THE world is your oyster if you are computersavvy. People who know SAP, software used worldwide to help organise aspects of a business, are increasingly in demand.

Jason Lloyd, from Cardiff, says: ‘I loved IT at school and researched firms offering training. I found that IT consultancy Capgemini offered entry jobs for trainee SAP consultants. You are paid while studying for your degree.’

Jason, 23, who recently spent five weeks in India training in the SAP programming language ABAP, advises: ‘SAP is such a huge technology that there is a wide range of different careers you can get into. So make sure to research job types when choosing this career path.’

Stuart Coombs, head of Capgemini’s Wales Delivery Centre, says: ‘ We look for new starters or those early in their careers who can show they want to get out and get on, demonstrated through work experience, volunteering or sport.

‘Research areas that interest you and try to keep up to date with the latest developments.

‘ For experienced professionals, SAP experience is important and candidates need to be keen to support and train others.’

Che Hookings, chief executive of the Recruit121 Group, which specialises in jobs for SAP professionals, says: ‘Demand for graduate trainees in SAP is at a two-year peak.’

Salaries for new entrants vary, but experienced staff are paid from £40,000 to more than £150,000.
