Haiti bans Oxfam ... for now
OXFAM Great Britain has been temporarily suspended in Haiti while the country’s officials investigate how the charity handled its sex scandal.
The aid group said senior members of staff met Haiti government staff yesterday and promised to co-operate with the inquiry. The two-month suspension comes in the wake of resignations and dismissals of Oxfam staff in Haiti following allegations of sex parties involving prostitutes amid an earthquake relief effort.
Oxfam claims it will continue working on construction and development projects in Haiti, through afilliated groups, but anticipates the suspension will have a significant impact on its work. It says it currently helps 750,000 people in Haiti.
