Sunderland chief ready to give club away FREE

- By CRAIG HOPE

SUNDERLAND owner Ellis Short will give the club away for nothing if a buyer is prepared to take on its substantial debt. The Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League last season and are now bottom of the Championship and said to be losing £500,000 per week. Short has had enough and he could be willing to forgo the majority of the £69million he is owed of the debt, last reported at £137m. The American has been trying to sell the club for nearly two years but the only interest has been from an unnamed German consortium who failed to produce proof of funds. Short broke his three-year silence in November to state he was no longer looking for a buyer and even set his sights on a top-seven finish in the Premier League. Chris Coleman was appointed soon after, and he said yesterday: ‘I have never spoken with the chairman and I have been here three months. I have no idea about the price. I have no idea who, if there is someone (interested).’
