Theresa the unifier
YET again, Theresa May has confounded the pundits and soothsayers of Westminster, who’ve been telling us for months that she would never get her Cabinet of Leavers and former Remainers to agree on a strategy for Brexit.
Can these be the same ministers we saw at Chequers this week, smiling beatifically at the camera, happily united behind the negotiating position they’d just agreed?
The early signs are that Britain will be pressing for a common-sense deal, giving us freedom from the single market and customs union, but keeping us aligned with the EU in areas such as the car industry, where our interests coincide.
Yes, Tory Remoaners such as the publicity junkie Anna Soubry (whose currency is rapidly devaluing) will continue to make trouble. And yes, Jeremy Corbyn will carry on putting cynical political calculation before the wishes of the 70 per cent of Labour constituencies that voted Brexit.
No doubt, too, the Westminster bubble’s crystal-ball gazers will go on telling us Mrs May’s premiership hangs by a fraying thread, which could snap at any moment. A word of advice: don’t bet on it.
