In the doghouse, pet who’s eaten three sofas
WITH her face poking out of her fluffy white cocoon, Ruby the lurcher looks the picture of contentment.
But that cosy little ‘ nest’ actually landed her in the doghouse – because it’s the remains of the third sofa she has destroyed in two years.
The pet has also made her way through her family’s carpets, a mattress, numerous pairs of shoes and several teddy bears.
Owner Hannah Defoe, 31, estimates Ruby has cost the family £1,500 – including £1,200 on the sofas. However, she says that it’s Ruby’s desire to nest that drives her destruction, rather than bad behaviour.
The mother of two, who got Ruby from a rescue centre, has even caught her dog having a snooze inside one of the sofas after digging a hole in it. Following the two-year-old pet’s latest escapade on Tuesday, Miss Defoe, from Diss, Norfolk, said: ‘I had gone out for 45 minutes and I came back to that explosion.
‘She’d managed to pull all the stuffing out. She had this look on her face like “I know I’ve done wrong but I’m so comfortable and warm”.
‘It’s a nesting thing. It tends to be in the winter when she does it. She just loves snuggling.
‘I don’t even tell her off any more. We’re so used to it.’
