Top sports star ‘recklessly gave partner HIV’
AN INTERNATIONAL sports star has been questioned by police over claims they knowingly infected a partner with HIV.
The high-profile individual, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces a life sentence if convicted of intentionally passing on the virus.
Thames Valley Police detectives have questioned the personality, who attended a police station voluntarily with a lawyer on February 12. They suspect an offence of grievous bodily harm may have been committed.
The alleged victim tested positive for HIV at a clinic and claims the star gave it to them sometime between December 2013 and June 2014. This person claims to have realised the star had HIV after finding tablets used to treat it. It is understood detectives will soon send a file to prosecutors stating whether charges should be brought.
The maximum penalty for reckless transmission of HIV is five years. For intentional transmission, it is life.
A source told the Sun on Sunday the star denies any wrongdoing and is worried about a court case. Thames Valley Police said their inquiry is ongoing and that there have been no arrests.
