VAR would have awarded Morata ‘goal’

- MY VERDICT GRAHAM POLL

CHELSEA could have salvaged a point at Old Trafford when Alvaro Morata scored in the 86th minute, but he was incorrectly ruled offside. At full speed it looked close and it appeared United goalkeeper David de Gea stopped after hearing the whistle, but the Chelsea forward finished well. Had VAR been in operation the ‘goal’ would have been checked and then reviewed. Slow-motion replays confirmed that Victor Lindelof had played Morata onside and, while it was marginal, offside is not opinion-based but factual, so the goal should have been allowed to stand.
