Snack left us with eggs on our faces

-

RECENT stories in Peterborough about exploding wine bottles reminded me of when I was nine and my mate and I went back to his house for food. As his parents were at work, we looked around for something to eat. Seeing eggs and bread, we put some fat in a frying pan and placed the eggs — unbroken — into the fat. Waiting with hunger pangs in our stomachs, we watched in anticipation. After what seemed like ages, there was an enormous explosion of eggs and fat flying all over the kitchen walls, ceiling and ourselves. For weeks we were walking around with red burn marks on our faces, and for several years there was dried egg on the ceiling at my mate’s house. I’ll never forget that day, but as it turned out, I am now a fairly good cook.
